Sudan’s Kordofan region has been engulfed in extreme violence tied to a renewed, ongoing conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since at least 2023. Last week, an estimated 300 people were killed across several villages in a series of massacres and live burnings. The humanitarian toll has been staggering: the data visual below shows an estimated 13 million lives lost (since 2023), with over 500,000 infants dying from malnutrition, according to the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate. Displacement has been consistent in the region, but this July it has especially surged; while some officials cite 40,000 displaced, paramilitary and human rights groups estimate the number is now closer to 150,000 people.

The aerial image below, captured by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL), offers a satellite scan of Shaq al-Noum; one of several villages recently attacked and destroyed. Areas highlighted in red show buildings that were burned down during the latest raids. HRL has been documenting and verifying satellite evidence from the region since 2023.
